Welcome to Advanced Hearing Aid Clinic, Canada's leading audiology clinic. Rodney Taylor, Caryn Bursch, and Melanie Baur, Doctors of Audiology, are one of Canada's few Doctoral level Audiologists. The Clinical Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) is the highest standard for practicing audiologists. In Canada, there are very few audiologists who have made the commitment to pursue this higher education. Always committed to excellence, Rodney and Caryn have been providing the highest level of professional hearing healthcare to clients throughout the region for over 15 years. In 2008, the team at Advanced Hearing Aid Clinic welcomed Melanie Baur, a well known Doctor of Audiology from New York City and Angie Prudhomme, a Hearing Instrument Specialist. Shortly after, Sean Lennox, a University of British Columbia graduate with a special interest in research, joined the Advanced Team. In 2009, Ian Murray, a seasoned Hearing Instrument Specialist in Ottawa also joined The Advanced Group of Clinics.
We perform comprehensive consultations for hearing loss; Meniere's Disease; fluctuating hearing loss, middle ear function (including multifrequency tympanometry-a test that is not typically done clinically and gives insight in to middle ear disorders); hearing aid assessments, prescriptions, verification (using 3 dimensional speech mapping) on hearing devices and ear protection and reprogramming of hearing aids; aural rehabilitation; Auditory Rehabilitation (LACE); hyperacusis (decreased sound sensitivity) and tinnitus (phantom auditory perception) with tinnitus therapy; auditory integrity (complex electro- and neurophysiologic investigations such as electrocochleography (EcochG), otoacoustic emissions (OAE), auditory steady-state response (ASSR), and auditory brainstem response (ABR); Auditory Processing (APD); comprehensive balance assessments utilizing video electronystagmography and VEMP testing, Dynamic Posturography assessments, Balance Rehabilitation, and ototoxicity monitoring.
The Advanced Group of Clinics is set to begin a new model of addressing the needs of our adult hearing impaired patients, based on the recommendations of Dr. Robert Sweetow of UCSF Medical Center. "Hearing Aid Evaluations" will be geared more towards Full Communication Needs Assessments in order to fully understand the communication demands of each individual patient, thus taking our services beyond simply addressing the hearing test and word recognition scores in quiet. We aim to incorporate both subjective and objective assessments in order to best determine what our primary goals will become.
"...Communication, the ultimate objective for our patients, encompasses not only hearing, but listening skills, cognitive-based interpretation, and communication strategies. Hearing aids may (or may not be) one of the components of an overall rehabilitation plan, but a rehabilitation plan is not a component of hearing aids. In other words, the current tendency to supplement hearing aid fittings with additional therapy is misguided. Instead, hearing aids should supplement the global plan of communication treatment.
"...By offering this holistic approach, patients can recognize that it is not just the ears that the audiologist is treating and that limitations in their hearing aids/systems do not restrict them to a life of communication difficulty" (Dr. R. Sweetow).
Advanced Clinics will also offer LACE (Listening and Communication Enhancement) therapy, an interactive, computerized aural rehabilitation program, to further supplement our patients' continued development of auditory skills. This will be accessible to all those with hearing loss/hearing aids or communication devices, in addition to those with other auditory processing difficulties such as hearing in the presence of background noise (Auditory Figure Ground), auditory memory, and other higher-level processing that can impact ease of communication.
All of these services are available for both children and adults. Test results are discussed with the patient at the time of testing. Other services include wax removal, video otoscopy, musician's monitor systems and ear protection, FM systems, and a full line of hearing aid accessories, assistive listening devices, and batteries. We have an onsite repair station, and sales and service for all hearing aid makes and models. Advanced Hearing Aid Clinic offers consultations with onsite Ear, Nose and Throat physicians.
